Cats
Bringing home a new kitten? Here’s how to keep your feline companion happy and healthy!
Feeding
- 6 weeks old – Ready for solid food. Choose balanced kitten food (dry or wet).
- Feeding schedule:- 6-8 weeks – 4 meals daily
- 8-12 weeks – 3 meals daily
- 12 weeks+ – Twice daily
- Always provide fresh water and avoid milk, which can cause tummy troubles.
Toilet training
- Most kittens naturally use a litter tray by 4-6 weeks.
- Keep the tray accessible & in a quiet spot, away from food and sleeping areas.
- Place your kitten in the tray after meals or naps to encourage good habits.
Worming & fleas
- Worming:- Every 2 weeks until 12 weeks old, monthly until 6 months, and every 3 months after that
- Flea protection is year-round, not just in summer! Ask us about safe treatments for kittens.
Desexing
- Females 4 months – Prevents unwanted pregnancy
- Males 4 months – Reduces roaming and fights.
Vaccination
- Start at 8-9 weeks old, every 4 weeks until 16 weeks, to protect against cat flu & enteritis.
- Boosters are given at 6 months, then every 3 years for continued immunity.
- To see the vaccination schedule, visit our vaccination page.

Microchipping & regristration
- A small ‘chip’ is injected under your cat’s skin to give permanent identification when scanned. Each animal has its own identification number that is stored on a readily accessible database.
Vet visits & travel tips
- Get your kitten used to its carrier early.
- Secure the carrier in the car and cover it to keep your kitten calm.
- Use Feliway spray inside the carrier for extra comfort.
