Dental care
Performed by a qualified vet to ensure a thorough dental check
A qualified veterinarian performs our equine dental procedures to ensure a thorough examination and identification of dental pathology. We prefer to perform dental work under sedation, which enhances safety for both horse and handler, improves comfort, and reduces anxiety for the horse.
The examination includes assessment of the teeth and oral structures, followed by correction of common issues such as sharpened enamel points, removal of wolf teeth under analgesia (pain relief), and management of dental pathologies like diastemata (gaps between teeth), hooks, ramps, periodontal disease, and fractured teeth. We can arrange referral to specialist facilities for complex cases, such as fractured teeth requiring surgical removal.
We typically perform a sheath cleaning during the visit to maintain hygiene and prevent discomfort.
Why annual equine dentals are important
Unlike many other animals, horses’ teeth continuously erupt throughout their lives and wear unevenly due to their grazing habits and diet. This can lead to sharp points, hooks, and gaps that cause pain, difficulty chewing, weight loss, and behavioural problems. Without regular dental care, these issues can progress to more severe conditions such as infections, tooth loss, and digestive problems. Annual dental examinations help maintain oral health, comfort, and overall wellbeing.
