What you need to know about Avian Influenza (H5N1 bird flu)
Date: 16 Jul 2026
Avian influenza (H5N1), also known as bird flu, is receiving increased attention in New Zealand. While the current risk remains low, The Vet Centre is taking sensible precautions to help protect our patients, clients, staff, and local bird populations.
Can I bring my sick bird to the vet?
Yes, we are continuing to see sick owned birds, including pet birds and backyard chickens.
Please call us before bringing your bird to the clinic. This allows our team to discuss your bird's symptoms and prepare appropriate biosecurity measures before your arrival.
What are the signs of avian influenza (bird flu) in birds?
Signs that may be associated with avian influenza (H5N1) include:
- Tremors or other neurological signs
- Twisted neck
- Inability to stand or fly
- Difficulty breathing
- Sudden weakness or collapse.
These signs can also be caused by other illnesses, so veterinary assessment is important.
What should I do if I find a sick or dead wild bird?
Do not pick up or transport sick or dead wild birds.
Instead, contact the MPI Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline on 0800 80 99 66 for advice before taking any action. Handling potentially infected birds may increase the risk of disease spread.
When should I report sick or dead wild birds?
If you see three or more sick or dead wild birds in the same area, do not touch them.
Report them immediately to the MPI Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline on 0800 80 99 66.
How can I help protect New Zealand's birds?
You can help by:
- Reporting groups of sick or dead wild birds
- Avoiding contact with potentially affected wildlife
- Calling your vet before bringing in a sick bird
- Following biosecurity advice from veterinary professionals and MPI
Thank you for helping protect New Zealand's birds, our community, and the biosecurity of our clinics.
